At the beginning, the houses were really precarious. There were light and temporary fortifications into a place surrounded by a fence. In the middle, there was a wood blockhouse with several levels which contained munitions. In total, they used to build four shacks for living, and another one for business. As it was built on the ground level, it was frequent that there was a deluge or fire. Sometimes, it could be swept away by a tsunami. So in 1874, a decision was taken to improve the people of the colony's life, with the hope that much people would come next.
