The site of Grand-Bassam is known by the Portuguese since 1469, when Soeiro Da Costa disembarked. The city itself was born in 1843 in the middle of unsanitary marshland. It quickly became a real strategic position for the expansion of French installations in Africa, thanks to its two trading posts.

For example here you can see the old building of African Central Bank which is a real representation of the importance of commercial activities.
